Publication design

I was part of a team of 3 students who designed the catalogue for the exhibition “TANA BANA - designing substantive freedoms” where the work of the students, faculty and artists-in-residence of Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology was showcased at the Ars Electronica festival (Linz, Austria) in September 2005. The catalogue juxtaposes the exhibited projects with critical articles by eminent artists and professionals.

We wanted to play with the way the book was read. Small thumbnails with page numbers acted like hyperlinks connecting the reader to another article or project that is in some way connected to the one they are reading. At the top of the left hand side page are “tags” that describe that page’s content. The contents page is primarily visual with thumbnails of each spread, so that when people flip through the book they are searching for that image rather than the page number. Taking this book from the drawing board to press, I learnt the process of publication design.
